SEO Checklist: The Practical Version
Ten steps, from picking a niche to tracking what’s actually working. This SEO checklist is purely about rankings, not the whole site. If you want the broader audit covering speed, content depth, and conversion too, that’s the 21-point checklist instead.
This checklist is for building things up properly from the start. If rankings or traffic that were previously fine have suddenly fallen, the SEO ranking drop diagnosis scores the six most likely causes against your actual answers instead of starting from item one.
01 · Foundation — before writing anything0/6
If this is weak, everything else in this SEO checklist struggles.
If your site tries to talk about everything, Google won’t trust it for anything.
02 · Keyword & Intent Mapping0/5
This is where most sites fail, not through lack of effort, through mismatched intent.
03 · Content That Actually Ranks0/6
Most content doesn’t rank because it’s generic. If your article sounds like a hundred others, it sits on page five forever.
04 · On-Page SEO Checklist0/5
Basic, but still genuinely required.
Schema, meta fields, and on-page signals are exactly what Rank Math handles automatically once it’s configured properly, worth setting up before doing any of this by hand.
05 · Technical SEO Checklist0/6
Don’t overcomplicate this part.
Start with caching and asset fixes, WP Rocket covers most of this in one plugin. If TTFB is still high after that’s properly configured, hosting may genuinely be the ceiling, that’s a different fix, covered honestly in the Cloudways review.
People obsess over technical SEO when their content is weak. Content still matters more.
06 · Internal Linking0/3
Underrated growth lever, genuinely.
07 · Backlinks0/2
The authority layer.
No backlinks means slow growth, no matter how good the content is.
08 · User Experience0/4
Google watches this, directly or indirectly.
If people leave quickly, rankings drop. That’s the whole mechanism, no need to overthink it further than that.
09 · Content Consistency0/3
10 · Track & Improve0/2
Both of these items assume GA4 is actually reporting correctly. If you’ve never checked, duplicate tags and broken event triggers are common enough on WordPress that it’s worth a look, the audit covers the two most common causes, or run the 60-second diagnostic instead.
This SEO checklist is deliberately just the SEO layer. If your rankings are fine but the site still isn’t converting, or you’re not sure whether the actual bottleneck is speed, content, or something else entirely, the 21-point Website Success Checklist covers all four layers together, interactive, tracks your progress as you go.
